Soft mattresses are suitable for those with a smaller profile than average, or, people that sleep constantly on their side. Anybody else would be better to consider a medium firmness mattress. Remember, firmness is not the same as comfort, a soft mattress is not necessarily comfier and you may find yourself having neck or back problems if the mattress is not right for you.

Soft Mattress Buyer’s Guides
(1) What Is The Softest Type Of Mattress?
The softest mattresses are often incorrectly referenced depending on the type of filling, like memory foam or latex. In actuality, the softness of a mattress is entirely dictated by the spring tension or, where the mattress is foam only, the tension of the foam. To that end, all mattresses below fall into the spectrum of soft mattresses and all will be suitable for you if your ultimate goal is one of obtaining a soft mattress.
(2) What Is A Soft Mattress Good For?
Soft mattresses are only typically recommended for people that fall into a certain bracket. So if you have a low body mass and sleep on your side then you may find that a soft mattress will be suitable for you. In other circumstances however a soft mattress could prove harmful. The key to remember is that a soft mattress does not mean it is a comfortable mattress, comfort and tension can be related to an extent but are by no means the same thing. More often than not, the average person should be looking for a medium firmness of mattress. Soft mattresses are great for side sleepers and those with low BMI but are by no means a blanket recommendation and anyone suggesting otherwise is misinformed.

(4) Are Soft Mattresses Good For Your Back?
We often get asked about whether a too soft mattress can cause back pain. The answer to this and whether mattresses can be good for your back is that typically, a soft mattress will not help with back pain. Typically back pain can be helped with a firmer tension mattress due to the additional support that it brings. Since a soft mattress offers less support due to its reduced tension, it in turn is most typically not suitable for those that suffer from back pain. Our general advice after a decade in the industry is that you should not be purchasing a soft mattress if you suffer from back pain.
(5) Are Soft Mattresses Better For Side Sleepers?
Soft mattresses are ideal for side sleepers, that’s because where soft mattresses offer less support generally, they also sink far further and contour to your body far easier while offering less resistance, this means those that sleep on their side will sink into the mattress more and still receive an amount of support across the mid-region while sleeping. Should you happen to have an average of higher BMI I would personally recommend a soft-medium or medium to side sleepers in this segment as you should be able to get the best of both worlds as a side sleeper, that’s enough tension to support and contour, with enough bounce to not cause problems for those that sleep on their side and feel like a part of their bodies isn’t making suitable contact with a mattress.
(6) How Can I Make My Soft Mattress Firmer?
So we get quite a few people email in asking about making their existing soft mattress firmer. They’re starting to see problems from back pain or they just aren’t seeing a comfortable amount of support from the product but don’t want to pay full-wedge for an entire new mattress. Luckily there are a few options.
Fit a hard foam mattress topper – Mattress toppers can come in a rage of fillings and firmness to either soften or firm up the sleep experience with a mattress. Keep an eye out for a memory foam mattress topper, or even a latex or polyurethane topper will work, as long as it has a decent firmness rating.
Use plywood boards – If your mattress is too soft, simply placing boards between the mattress and bedframe may drastically change the feeling of the product. Slats can allow a mattress to sag and sink and bolstering this area can have the desired effect.
Adjust room temperature – So, believe it or not, the temperature of the room can have a measurable impact on the firmness of your mattress. Those that have a memory foam product, the very technology that helps it mould to your body is very much dependent on heat in order to make that happen. A hot room therefore, will soften and reduce the firmness of the memory foam. The opposite is true should the mattress be too firm, warm the bedroom up and the memory foam will soften. Normally not too feasible this one because people generally have their thermostat set to whatever is comfortable and are unwilling to sacrifice heat for a slightly firmer mattress.
